Packaging + landing page
How Juniper Collective Saved 9 Hours on Scope Creep
A two-person design studio turned drifting client asks into change orders early — and stopped subsidizing "quick favors" on a packaging and web project.
- Hours saved
- 9 hours
- Revision rounds
- 7 → 3
- Time to approval
- 6 days
Challenge
Juniper Collective (anonymized) was designing retail packaging and a product landing page for a DTC brand. Requests arrived as friendly DMs: extra SKU variants, a second illustration style, social cutdowns "while you're at it." The partners said yes to keep momentum — then ate 9+ hours of unbilled work per engagement reconciling what was actually in scope.
Approach
Juniper locked the agreement with countable deliverables and two revision rounds per milestone. In Accountability Chat:
- Scope Drift cards flagged language that stepped outside the SOW.
- The team used Ignore when a note was truly in-scope polish, and Create Change Order when it was new work.
- Clients saw revision usage inline (e.g. 2/2) before another round started.
Packaging proofs and the landing staging link lived in Review Workspace — feedback stayed on the asset, not in a side thread.
Where the 9 hours came from
| Time sink (before) | Hours reclaimed | How |
|---|---|---|
| Unpaid add-on deliverables | ~5 | Change orders before work shipped |
| Re-explaining revision limits | ~2 | Inline revision counter |
| End-of-project scope fights | ~2 | Drift caught in week two, not invoice time |
Results
Drift warnings converted to three paid change orders on one project — work that would have been absorbed. Revision rounds dropped from an average of seven to three. Neither partner described the client relationship as worse; clients appreciated clarity upfront.
Takeaway
Scope creep is a war of small asks. Juniper won by making drift visible early — not by being difficult at invoice time. Nine hours returned to work they actually sold.
